Exhibiting Artist: Crystal Marshall (Jamaica)

Contemporary artist Crystal Marshall lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally from Kingston Jamaica, her paintings pay homage to her life experiences rooted in the cultural disparities of the modern-day African diaspora.

Marshall’s distinctive style portrays isolation and self-reflection, and expresses the spirit and atmosphere of the black consciousness in its effort to reconcile its own relationship with true identity and image. Symbolic motifs such as wool, thorns, hair, and figurative and allegorical representations are used to express displacement, hostility, victimisation, exclusion, oppression and withdrawal. “I am a storyteller and I welcome the viewer,” the artist explains.
