Launched in 2015 by Joanna Mackiewicz-Gemes, l’étrangère is a contemporary art gallery based in Shoreditch, East London. The idea of l’étrangère addresses the philosophical, political, social and personal connotations of being a stranger in one’s own country. It suggests a displacement, searching for and re-defining of identity, being an outsider, the ‘other’, whilst also pointing to the strange and the uncanny. l’étrangère works with artists who identify with these ideas through addressing issues of identity, exposing and embracing the ‘other’, investigating and questioning the status quo, and combating the contemporary world that is described by Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman as a liquid modernity.
