Canadian-owned ART LABOR Gallery is based in Shanghai and Vancouver. Since 2007, the gallery has grown into a notable Shanghai art destination and received worldwide notice. ART LABOR’s objective was and remains to show established artists alongside emerging ones. The gallery has presented well-known creative figures including Douglas Coupland, Koen Vanmechelen, Mustafa Hulusi and Germaine Koh, and nurtured the development of major mid-career artists such as Lu Xinjian, Zhou Fan, and Lu Yang.
At START 2019, ART LABOR Gallery presents London-based Zimbabwean artist Marc Standing, whose vibrant and inventive painting has developed along a complex path. Driven by an innate compulsion to paint, Standing explores tension felt by a personal search for identity, embodied by complexities felt by the mass consciousness - one which has been left with toxic traces of colonialism. Complex and sublime in the originality and mastery of his brush work, they are informed by anthropology, biology and the complexities of existence, both physical and metaphysical.
