ART LABOR Gallery is a contemporary gallery started by Martin Kemble in 2007 and based in Shanghai. Winner of Time Out magazine's "People's choice award for best gallery in Shanghai" in 2014, twice on Modern Painter's top 500 galleries worldwide, the gallery has always strove to find unique artists from both China and around the globe.
The gallery began as a curious space exploring Shanghai's art scene and the direction that emerging art was taking in China, and is now an art destination in the city. It has nurtured emerging talents now famous like Lu Yang, Lu Xinjian, and many others. ART LABOR also encourages its more established artists to support and mentor emerging artists, just as the gallery itself has a focus on the development of new talent and ideas. It has also shown a host of internationally recognized artists, including several participating in the Venice Biennale. 12 years after its foundation, the gallery has played an integral role in the expansion of the Shanghai art scene, which is now decidedly more international in scope and is truly becoming the center of the art world in Asia. ART LABOR’s artists are about half Chinese mainland and half of other countries, Canadians Douglas Coupland, Howie Tsui, & Germaine Koh, and UK’s Mustafa Hulusi, HK’s MC Yan, and NY’s Fab Five Freddy to name but a few.
