Sonya Radan was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she studied and attained her master’s degree in painting at the Academy of Fine Art. She settled in London in 1991. Sonya explores different media, painting on wood, textile and glass, as well as woodcarving, drawing and collage. She has exhibited in the UK and in galleries and museums elsewhere in Europe and across former Yugoslavia: Belgrade, Dubrovnik, Sarajevo, Split and Zagreb.

For her Recollection of Wood series (acrylic on wood and metal), Sonya uses materials that have had a previous life: bits of old houses, remnants of railway sleepers, lumps of driftwood, for example. Painting on four-sided blocks has enabled her to create freer, more dynamic paintings that can be presented as sculpture. Her ‘blocks’ also feature illustrations from The Blacksmith and the Bull, a modern poem in epic form, which she has helped to publish.

Sonya also works as an art therapist in the UK and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Last year (2017), she was included in Lighthouses: An Anthology and Monograph of Artists of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Diaspora, published by Art Rabic, Sarajevo. She is a member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Art Society Association.
